The elephant's egg

HORTON HATCHES THE EGG

Latest book we got for Maoster and one that we really quite enjoy. It's a simple story about a faithful elephant and a terribly lazy bird. The story short - Lazy bird wants a break from warming her egg, begged an elephant (Horton) who promised her he would after much persuasion that she won't be gone for long. Hours turned to days, turned to months. The bird never returned as she was having such fun. Horton stayed up on the nest, come winter, come storm, come hunters, come relocation, he never broke his promise and stayed with his egg.
The words that gave him strength and that he chants when times are really tough, were, " I meant what I said, And I said what I meant. An elephant's faithful, One hundred per cent!" Out of pure coincidence, the lazy bird came face to face with Horton and remembered the egg and before anything could be said , the egg cracked. Finally after 51 months! The lazy bird hearing the cracking egg, suddenly cried that Horton had stolen the egg and the egg should be hers. Well, the ending was that the egg hatched into an elephant bird, with trunk of an elephant and wings of a bird.Happy Ending for Horton who gets to keep this elephant bird.

What I learned from this story:

1. Keeping promises.
Tough. Truly. Especially when you have NOTHING to gain. When facing the toughest of times, will we just abandon ship and said I did what I could.

2. Who do we help?
Normally or should I say, I only help those I like. In this story, Horton walked passed and hardly know that person and he helped. Silly? Naive? What an elephant's brain? However, I am reminded that my faith tells me to try to help everyone. Not those I love only. Wow. Even a lazy -annoying bird alike person. I think I need some more time. I will try.

 3. What you believe in, shapes who you are.( Especially during bad times)

Horton believes in being faithful. He believes that he said what he meant. What do I believe in? Goodness? Faithfulness? Righteousness? Honesty?

4. The light at the end of the tunnel or Never.

I think Horton ever expects the egg turned out to be like him. I mean, how could it be? Good things may come to us when we do good but maybe it will never. The important thing is to do it anyway.

Side Note:

When I read this story, I am sorta of reminded that Horton is really very Aung-ish. As we celebrate our 8th year of marriage and our 15 years of together-ness, he had remained faithful, gentle, kind and most of all, he is still fulfilling his part of the wedding vows we exchanged. To have and to hold, to cherish and to love..... I better not be that stupid bird in that story ha ha ha......
