Are you missing the "shoes"?

This is NOT the Cinderella story although what I was hoping for was exactly a Cinderella's ending - A HAPPY EVER AFTER.

Aung and I have been married for coming 11 years and we dated for 7 and that make us in today's fast paced and ever changing environment a pretty darn long time. I cannot remember honestly how was life before him, nor am I ever thinking how will my life be in the future with him. In fact, I do not think very much about him. As a person, as a partner, as a lover, as a dad, as a friend. Honestly, I stopped "thinking". It is pretty much like, you stopped tracking how much water you drink per day or how many times did you pee in a day. You know you do it and you know the importance of it but you just do not put your mind into something so "basic".

Then, there are the offsprings. And other people's offsprings ( almost 120 of them this Semester). Then there is the "new role" at work that is on my mind. I mean there are 101 things going on my mind and yet there is nothing on my mind (it is very complex, I tell you this grey matter of mine). In the end, I realized, between my Aung and I we stopped. In the middle of all this building a home, raising children and hope, the "exchanges" stopped, the "conversations" stopped. Without us knowing, the fizz in the coke is gone!

I didn't know it until Clarks told me so.

Aung bought a pair of shoes 2 weeks ago. It was a pair of tracking shoes he bought (tracking????) and after that, he placed it in the study room. On Monday, we went to J8 to get dinner and told him that his work shoes are a wreck and we should pop in to buy a pair of shoes if we have time. So we went to Hush puppies and he got a pair of shoes and we walked around and I asked him if he would want to get another pair of casual shoes and stuff like that and we went back home. When we reached home, Aung's mom exclaimed, " Why did we get another pair of shoes when Aung just bought a pair of new shoes?" She had assumed, I know about the shoes.

The shoes? What shoes? Aung took them out from the study room and showed me his "tracking" shoes and said, " they are not my usual shoes. I was thinking about them. They were on sale. I didn't know what to do with them and he laughed."  I wasn't laughing.

Something stirred in me that night. I couldn't quite sleep. No, I wasn't upset that Aung had bought a "senseless" pair of shoes. What shocked me was that, he didn't talk to me about buying the pair of shoes, He didn't tell me that he was looking at the shoes when he was thinking about them. He didn't even mentioned it when we were looking at shoes the very evening. I was honestly upset that we stopped "living" together.

Was it his fault? Not really. Perhaps the "small things" in life are not worth mentioning anymore because we have BIGGER things ( like when is the date of the excursion for the boys that we better remember). We used to have sms exchanges throughout the day sharing about stupid things and exciting things but because of work and stuff ( sometimes we do not reply or it seems mundane), we stopped totally.

Was it my fault? Perhaps. I am always so drowned in my world or busy playing with my friends that I do not stop and listen or even communicate. When we discuss things, the "boss" in me will normally go straight to the solution or convey my decision that there is no need for discussion etc.

I told Aung how I felt and what I feel. Guess it is a good start. I am thankful and grateful that Aung is always willing to embark on the "better" of us with positivity and tenderness. He did not brush it off and say , " Come on woman, it was just a pair of shoes! Just get on with LIFE! There is absolutely nothing wrong with us?" Instead, he texted me that I am such a big part of my life and the most interesting bun around.

This is really something to reflect upon as we are celebrating our 11th wedding anniversary at the corner of this month. Coke is not coke without fizz.

That's what Clarks told me. Thank God for that stupid pair of tracking shoes - They definitely put back some stuff on track!

Someone pressed the pause button

and before I knew it this is the very first entry I made in 2015.

Many times when I experienced something in life and I thought, I should update my blog, another experience came and after waves of waves of experiences, I find no footprints on the sand. Nothing that I remembered of.

I better write before I forget these experiences and memories. Forget how my boys talk. The conversations we have. How I feel about people, how I felt about God. How living was all about.

To kickstart, I want to jot down this observation I made.

In our young senseless days ( I still would have done it today, so still as senseless but not at all that young), we made our bathroom door in our room transparent. Yes - you see it all. When you poo, when you pee, when you shower, when and where you scratch ( okay it is very clear now) all could be seen clearly.

We had that door ( to my MIL's dismay) and we loved it. We loved it because NO ONE can come into our room to use our toilet and bathroom without having to close our master bedroom entirely - and it seems rude to be inside someone's master bedroom ALONE. It is just not a Chinese thing.

What is so wickedly pleasurable defines how Aung and I interact as well. We just talk to each other even when we go do our intimate private affairs ( or defined as some people) and it spares out some private time for us especially when we lock our children out as it is (shame shame) to see someone bathe as they are growing up way too fast. ( we confessed that it is only recently that we drove them out but Callum is still allowed to roam free range).

Nonetheless the good times have to come to an end. When you know that the bigger purpose outweigh your personally delight and one just have to sacrifice. We laminate the glass door with another opaque sticker that covers the centre of the door ( basically the head till the knees cannot be seen) because it is TRUE that the boys will somehow barge in when I forget to lock the door or Callum will be screaming outside wanting to come into the room. Or Myles would want to stay in our room because that is the room we allow air-conditioning. NO ONE WANTS TO SEE A NAKED MOTHER. IT IS JUST NOT RIGHT TO SEE YOUR MOTHER NAKED. NOT WHEN SHE IS OVERWEIGHT!

Some funny observations were made after the transparent door was somewhat covered. Callum will squat right outside of the bathroom and peep in to talk to us. He is not used to this "not being able to see us" while talking to us. In case you think that he is the only one. Aung is also having a hard time adjusting to our new form of communication. The other day, he was talking to me while I was taking a shower and he opened the door and stood outside the opened door and talk to me. I asked him,"Why you opened the door? You can talk to me outside the door what! I can hear you." He laughed and said," I want to bare my feelings to you. I can only do it with bare doors. Now our door is not bare!"

Bare your feelings. This is the only way to communicate. To see each other in the most "naked" form is healthy ( not literally and perhaps it is in the marriage context) and that's perhaps the only way to go.

Outdated Romance

Dear Bun,

This is our diary... hopefully the start of a habit of writing thoughts about one another in a non - animal fighting way....

cheers...

TENtatively

Aungs are turning legally 10 this year in September. Although, rather weirdly, we cannot find our marriage certificate and therefore although we are legally married and binded together, there is NO way I can proof it to you unless I pay to get a duplicate copy of our certificate.

I digress. The main reason of me even blogging about it is, I have been thinking, that since it is our tenth year, I really wanna do something to celebrate our persistence in being together and writing it down should be the best way to organise thoughts (and so I teach). Going on a holiday has been on my mind but parental duties seemed to be in the way. Not only that stupid F1 will definitely make hotel rates sky high in Sept if we are planning a staycation (Ironically, my school or rather my dept  is largely responsible for the F1 happening in Singapore). And I want to be happy. If I wait for Aung to plan ( or not to plan), I will end up miserable and feeling unloved and all. So I am coming up with 10 things thatwe should do sans the children.

1. Dress up and go for dinner at a nice restaurant.
2. Go for a swim and enjoy some sun
3. Watch a decent adult movie that does not come with any morale values. Give me violence, give me blood, give me some sexual scenes and oh baby, I wanna hear some F word. You sort of get it?
4. Go shopping. Try on some clothes instead of buying them online. Try some shoes, try some accessories, get some sanity and wear some socks without holes in them.
5. Wake up without being woken up. Enough said.
6. Watch TV till I fall asleep.
7. I would like to do some massage but Aung hates it. So massage is OFF.
7. Go out late at night and have some wine. Get drunk. Get laid and then do point 5.
8. ?
9.?
10?

This is absolutely spot on. I have NO idea and this is really BAD!

It is so hard to think of 10 things to do!!!!!!!

Gosh, I think we will just end up with 1 and then wait for the next decade to try to do this stuff again. Or anyone who actually reads my  blog has any suggestions? Wait, does ANYONE actually reads my blog? Or is it only me and void and this space. Say hi? Okay.... u are not there.... okay... NO ONE is actually there......just like my 10 to do list.

I should just stop writing because it is NOT helping me to organise my thoughts and find me 10 things to do!

Being Frank.

And so, Frank said in some parts of the song,

Something in your eyes was so inviting
Something in you smile was so exciting
Something in my heart told me I must have you

and Frank said,

Ever since that night we've been together
Lovers at first sight, in love forever
It turned out so right for strangers in the night
Love was just a glance away, a warm embracing dance away

I love this song. This is one of those Frank's songs that will make me stop whatever I am doing to listen to it. I imagined this was LOVE. Inviting, exciting, so driven by love and lust and feeling so RIGHT together all the time.

But FRANK(LY), is this really TRUE?

The frank facts are:

  1. We do not gaze into each other's eyes longingly. Is that a new dress? (I had this for 10 years)
  2. We raise brows at each other that reads "YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG (AGAIN )"
  3. Our smses consist of mundane/ boring to do lists and reminders.
  4. We nudged/pushed each other to sleep a bit more to your side because there is no more space at my side.
  5. There are no more fantasies about each other - with or without clothes.
  6. Fine dining is a waste of money. You buy gifts that are practical - like an oven, a shaver, socks even!  Wait, what gifts? You want something, just buy lah.
  7. I just want you to be happy - oh really, please switch OFF the lights if you are the last person awake and if you are the first to wake, please dun make switch ON the lights cos that will wake me up and worse still, wake my kids up.
  8. And we stop asking each other and quite honestly embarrassing stupid questions such as" Do you love me or make bold statements like "I love you.

We are in a "working" relationship, whereby we make things happen. And this NOT only include the baby making part of our lives. This is where we are chauffers, maids, cooks, deliverymen, technicians, translators, negotiators, lawyers, auditors etc of our home that we build together. Day after day, months after months, years after years, we are moulded to operate together, strangely and sometimes I resist saying this, we morph into each other and become one another.

This means:
  1. I now could go shopping and look at the boxes that contained the item rather than the item itself.
  2. I know more about plants, animals and why good erasers are made of polymer fibre.
  3. I begin using toothbrush that are "soft" instead of "hard".
  4. I understand a little more about texture, shapes and sizes.
  5. I make coffee or milo with 2/3rds of hot water and 1/3 of room tempreture water.
  6. I know that sometimes less is more, especially in pizza toppings.
  7. I look at Lego and let it go under approved purchases alongside endless of thumbdrives.
  8. I will now buy ang ku kwey that is in bean paste.
  9. Ya Kun is no longer a stupid place.
  10. I also bend the shoes before I buy them for my children.
And the scary list goes on.

And, then, one realised that we have become one like the good book said. And I guess, quite frankly is this what Frank is saying, that love is just a glance away? One glance is all it takes? To know if he has been naughty or nice, faraway or near?

And then, the song of Frank is on loop and I smile. Being ONE, is better than being two. We build a home for our hearts together.

Happy V- Day everyone! ( Doing this post earlier to stay away from the loving crowd and before I change my mind about proclaiming about love!)

Maintaining Peace

In the morning before I rushed off to work, I was trying to find my diamond earrings.

I can't find it! And I remembered that I just did my spring cleaning around the table top and fears of me throwing away close to 5K worth of stones by mistake was just toooooooooo much to bear.

I really panicked! I was like... shit! Did I throw them away! Then, I feel that I need to go to the toilet, that always happens when I panic. Panic has a laxative effect on me.

I called for help. Aung who was sleeping still, came to the rescue while I was in the toilet and peering my head out of the door at the same time for some updates on my missing stones.

And then, Aung found a box that I kept these stones. I was eternally grateful.

He then declared and gave me a smile: " There is peace now again, on bunny's land!" He went back to bed.

Today is one day, I remembered why I married my husband. He saved my world and he maintained peace.

The Facts are Talking

Lovely Night.

Moon shining Bright.

Aung and son shared a nice walk under the sky.

Aung with hope and love, tells his son.

" Look at the moon. You can reach for the moon you know?"

His son replied: " Need a rocket, you know?"

****
Lovely noon.

Quiet time between Bun and Aung.

Bunster said something funny, Aung laughed his head off.

Bunster said, "you still find me funny all these years hor?"

Aung said," You mean you still believe I married you for your beauty?"

Sala Resort, Phuket

My smart husband brought me to this boutique hotel for our 5th wedding anniversary.
A private garden pool.
Daily massages.
Doing nothing
Wasting the hours away.
The best part. They serve the best breakfast I've tasted.
They serve steak for breakfast.
That's rabbit food he says. I agree.

Why Aung Should attend my Gender Communication Class...

BunsterWearing and showing off ( now I realise my mistake) the new underpants ( reads G) I got ( Gee bought it back from Canada) to Aung: Is this one nicer than the one I wore yesterday.

Aung : Yups, this one looks bigger.

Quite coincidently, I am now covering gender communication in my Business Communication class. I think I should get Aung to attend the lesson ; afterall this is really a (alive) lifeskill!

Maybe , just remotely maybe, with some help, pigs will perhaps fly.

Are you a Kiasu Parent?

Aung: Dear, I created an account for Mao.
Bunster: What account? ( mind thinking along the line of savings account, current account etc)
Aung: You can find him now at myles.aung@gmail.com
Bunster: huh? For what? I don't think he will be checking his e-mail soon.
Aung: You know that day I checked for my name on gmail and its not available. By the time he wants to apply for one, I think it won't be available.
Bunster: I see ( mind thinking about during his time there may be like other email address like maybe zmail or whatever.... )
Aung: Yar, so myles.aung@gmail.com
Bunster: Right....!
I have thoughts about this conversation throughout the day and it really makes me laugh... sigh MY AUNG! Funny right?

The story of AH TOOT...

It was a not so hot, not so cold day.

The house was quiet.

Suddenly an evil thought came to the minds of 2 people.

Snip it off the evil thought rang even louder in both minds.

Then off goes his top.

Then off goes his shorts.

He said NO to razor.

He said NO to the big scissors.

Aung worked on his back and sides ( which is not rather obvious)

Bunster worked on his fringe....

And, there you have it Mr Toot.

Oh boy did we ( Aung & Bunster) had fun!

We rolled on the floor and laughed till our side aches.

One more reason for having kids if you are still not sure if you want them....

They are just like a toy on some days like this!

Very itchy leh mommy, are we done yet?

Really, even my butt is so itchy!

Yar, at least some form of reward!

Don't ask me about my hair no more!

Don't we all love Mr Toot?

Weekly Dating Lessons

Thursdays are Mao's FREE DAY.

We termed it as a day whereby Mao can do whatever he wants without his parents. He can dribble his basketball non stop till the sun rises again; he can watch that senseless 9pm chinese drama with Grandma; he can eat ice cream on the sofa with ribena and end it with milk for the night. He does absolutely anything that Grandma says Okay. It's his FREE day!

We congratulate one another for our bright idea, we salivate at the thought of us on the bed without needing to watch another episode of BBC cartoon channel at night but tuning in to our ADULT SANITY programs! We think of how we need not rush through our dinner, go through the distance and fantasize on our HIGH night.

But each week, thursday come - we would be thinking what to do. Should we go Bugis to shop, go for a swim, dinner or a movie. We wonder why the excitement in reality was very much reduced. We try to talk non-maoster, we try to relax while we eat. Somehow the hours seems to double, time is taking its time each Thursday. Aung would always say, its OUR TIME, We can do anything we want. Somehow all my "if we are alone now hor we would be etc "ideas simply vanishes into thin air.

We end the night each thursday with a call to Serangoon to ask how the Maoster is doing. Our heart dipped if we heard he cried for us; our hearts gladdens when we hear him laughing at the background playing with his cousins.

It is exactly that since we are not doing exactly well in our weekly dating lessons, we cannot afford to miss even one.

I mean, is it that complicated? I mean, does anyone out there go for weekly dating lessons?

Thursdays are fun day for me - Come on Get a life!

It takes 2...

It takes 2 weddings in a row + a hectic Sunday to make me realised that age is indeed catching up.

From friday practice in church for sunday worship to saturday JL's holy matrimony to the wedding dinner with Mao in tow with us - he slept at midnight on friday and saturday, it is wise of us to not bring him along to Kelvin's wedding on sunday. Plus I had to wake up super early to rush to church as I am on duty on Sunday... by the end of Sunday, Aung and myself are basically dead meat. I still have parental duties of waking up early to cook for my son who simply loves homecooked food more than the food outside.

It takes 2 weddings in a row to make me reflect once again How GOOD our Lord is.

Seeing JL and SK walk down the aisle and exchanging their wedding vows before God and men reminded me again that God is good that he knows that 2 is better than one and that with all things so uncertain and fragile, God is the cornerstone of our lives. Being able to meet up once again with my NTU friends makes me thankful that God gave me friends I love that regardless of where we left each other at, we could pick it up and talk endlessly.

It also takes 2 weddings in a row + a hectic sunday to realise the importance of a supportive husband. Aung fully supportive of my ministry took care of that running imp in church till 10pm and was in spirit to LA KOPI with the gang back at the coffeeshop (now a luxury to us both) with Maoster in tow (who drank 100plus since ermm there was no yakult or milk there, nevermind lah hor a bit only :P, share with me mah). Aung fully supportive of me doing the translation work, woke up early to dice the vegetables ( that my MIL did already yeah!) while I do some last minute look at the verses and at the end of the day tells me that the English version makes more sense than the chinese one ( ha ha ha, he always says the best thing about me). He had to manage his son alone on sunday morning as I have chiong to church while he combat changing his son's clothes, poo and vomit and that miserable 15 mins walk under the sun as I took the car.

It also took 2 weddings in a row and a hectic sunday to wanna shout WHERE THE HECK ARE YOU GEE? I would be dumping some of that extra work load, and we would be taking endless of photographs and having a party!

At the end of the 2 weddings + hectic Sunday - I am much thankful that I am STILL ALIVE AND KICKING. Wake me up if you find me sleeping the whole of this week please!

My medal winning Aung entertaining his son on Sunday Noon - while I lay dead beside refusing to lift a finger, pretending I don't exist!

Sharpest Pencil In the Box

Bunster: You know Mao is still not talking yet but he is so cute!

Aung: Yups, he still can't count to 10!

Bunster: Yar, I think Tej counts to 30 and Meryl counts to 20 or something like that! And that seems like a few weeks or months back.

Aung: Hmmmmmmmmmm.... Then Mao how?

Bunster: Dunno... he is still funny lor with his counting 1, 2 and then 1, 2 then 7 8 and hurray!

Aung: He knows one lah... he is just not telling us....

Bunster: ha ha ha.... whatever lah, as long as he is happy can liao lor... You know you just want him to be happy for now before we start getting calls from his teachers.

Aung: Yups ,he is one happy boy. You know we don't really need him to be the sharpest pencil in the box...

Bunster: Sharpest pencil?

Aung: Yups... just don't be a highlighter can liao.

I think that's rather amusing... I've not heard about that before... but sounds quite cool.... That's why I love talking to my Aung. He always say things with colours, layers, punch and so flavoursome....he makes me laugh all the time and to think I am the one with the funny bones.

But... then... what's wrong with a highlighter? I like leh! Hmmmm... Why huh? Anyone knows?

US TALK

Aung: Don't take away my pillow, I like to cover my ears when I sleep.
Bunster: I like to cover my eyes when I sleep
Aung: Just don't cover your nose.

Aung: My mother has a tragic character.
Bunster: Tragic? I thought u normally use the word complicated.
Aung: Tragic for me.
Bunster: I see.

Aung: Do you know that your son was sniffing at night cos the wind from the fan was too strong.
Bunster: Oic, I didn't realise that
Aung: Oh, because as usual, both of us were well tucked in our blankets and we forget about him again.
Bunster: I see.

Bunster: Do you know that its a pain to be famous.
Aung: What happened?
Bunster: Well, the vegetable seller downstairs actually told me that I put on ALOT OF WEIGHT and that I used to be thinner long time ago. I mean, I only buy vegetable from the market like once or twice a month leh!!! GEK SIM! Is it his marketing strategy?
Aung: Next week you show him how you really look 10 years ago and tell him that its an improvement liao.
Bunster: Arghhhh, I am already on my cereal lunch diet liao... AND IT IS STILL NOT WORKING!
Aung: Try not wearing your maternity top when you go down marketing- maybe it works better?

Bunster: My maoster is so cute
Aung: yar, if we see him everyday and he is still cute then he must be damn cute!

Bunster: Why are you turning into the petrol station where we just topped up gas ytd night?
Aung: Oh becos we are talking about prices of petrol dropping and my mind is full of gas now.
Bunster: that's your brain all right! Gasey!

Aung: Are you still tired, rabbit?
Bunster: Ok lah, we are getting old.
Aung: yesss.. we need a break
Bunster: HOW?
Aung: Let's pretend to work, dump mao at your mom's and go to play
Bunster: Genius!

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up. Again, if two lie together, they are warm; but how can one be warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him."

Female I, Becky, take you Jonathan, to be my wedded husband. To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, 'till death do us part. And hereto I pledge you my faithfulness.

Happy 4th wedding anniversary.

And the same rabbit trick remains. No presents but I'll wrap myself up in a pink ribbon, and I need a really long ribbon this time.

In it Together

Are you a good parent?

Bun: Oh gosh, he pooed

Aung: A perfectly good new diaper ruined

Bun: What to do - can you change him and wipe him please. I'm still cooking my chicken rice.

Aung: All right! (takes out the pigeon wet wipes and starts the wiping process)

Bun: Okay, dinners ready. Mao up the feeding chair

After 10 minutes.

Bun: Gosh, stop putting ur entire fist into your pasta. Can you bring me a wet wipe please. His hand is so oily. Hey, don't use that piece there. You wiped his bottom with it right? (pointing at that piece on the floor that's not stained with shit, properly the last wet wipe used to verify that all shit is cleared)

Aung: (Picks that piece up) No lah, I didn't use this one. This one is new one. I pulled out extra.

Bun: Okay.

Aung: Wipes maoster's mouth, hands and table.

Bun: Why are you smiling and laughing? Aung walks away to throw the wet wipes in the kitchen.

Aung: Still quietly smiling and laughing away.

Bun: What? What's the joke?

Aung: Hee, ermmmm , i remembered wrongly. That's the piece i wiped his bottom with. Oops.

Bun: Oh man. Lucky, he doesn't have quite a memory yet. He won't know. Hee...
