It's amazing how children gives insights to adults and put things into perspectives and balances. Over weekend, Maoster and I made shepherd's pie. Delighted by his culinary outcome, he declared that he is going to sell his shepherd's pie for FREE.
Immediately, I corrected him, saying that if he sells, it must be for a profit or for $$$$. He gave it some thoughts and say, well $1 then. I immediately corrected him once again, telling him that $1 is too low, not enough to cover cost and to earn a living.
Maoster thought for a while and asked, " why need to sell expensive when he is already rich?". He immediately added that, " I dun understand why rich people need to have more money."
Maoster thinks he is rich - because in his world, he has everything he wanted I guess. He has his $1 coins, $0.50 coins and even a $0.10 coin makes him rich. He has a family. He is well loved. He has God. Indeed he has everything- he is rich.
But.... aren't we too? We do not earn a 5 digit income but we have enough. Enough for us to go to a decent restaurant and order what we like. Enough to go and watch a movie anytime we want. Enough to get that extra pair of shoes because we like it in that weird colour. We have enough to travel - not to exotic places but to travel within Singapore and even outside of the country. We have enough clothes, bags, food. To be honest, all our basic needs are met and far exceedingly. However, we still crave and ask for more. Higher pay, better lifestyle? What do we really want?
A sermon on Sunday spoke about the types of prayers that we Christians like to pray for. The GMT prayer. It stands for GIVE ME THIS, GIVE ME THAT. However, despite being a christian for years, I must admit that my prayers do consist alot on what I want God to give me. I think it is indeed time to reflect and ask God, what do you want me to give you?
Do you want my job?
Do you want my time?
Do you want my money?
Do you want me to invest more of myself in your work?
Do you want my children?
Do you want my family?
I like to end my year thinking of giving. Giving because He has given and I have received plenty. But giving is not without fear. But the words of Maoster rings in my ears: We are rich already. We have coins everywhere.
